solution for facebook static.ak.fbcdn.net waiting
Problem: Few days ago, my firefox browser started to refuse to load the www.facebook.com, in fact it loads the login page, but then lingers forever on the next step stating; "waiting for the static.ak.fbcdn.net" or "Transferring data from the static.ak.fbcdn.net" First I thought it's something with their server, or my ISP, but then I learned that all my friends that are on the same ISP aren't having similar problems what so ever. I thought it might be my wireless internet rooter, but with my Laptop connected wireless upon the same rooter everything's coming up roses, while parallel on my Main rig, it loads n' loads forever ;; I can not click upon any app or send any msg. I think I already tried everything.. Even power cycling the rooter, dns flush, malware, spyware etc..
Solution:
(Due to popularity of this post i am also including snapshots at the end)
So finally here is the solution...
google some online ping sites like http://ping.eu/ping/
and ping the problem like "static.ak.fbcdn.net" so that you will get the ip address in result like...
64 bytes from akamai-deploy-5.latnetserviss.lv (159.148.86.199): icmp_seq=1 ttl=49 time=43.5 ms
64 bytes from akamai-deploy-5.latnetserviss.lv (159.148.86.199): icmp_seq=2 ttl=49 time=43.6 ms
64 bytes from akamai-deploy-5.latnetserviss.lv (159.148.86.199): icmp_seq=3 ttl=49 time=43.5 ms
Since u got the IP Address "159.148.86.199" Now open
my computer > windows > system32 > Drivers > etc
here u will find a file named "hosts"
open it in notepad.
You may find
"127.0.0.1 localhost" somewhere at the end
make it a new entry ur ip address alongwith site like this
127.0.0.1 localhost
159.148.86.199 static.ak.fbcdn.net
save it..
Now refresh your site, in my case it was www.facebook.com
Its open now...

HI! I was researching my computer problem on Google and I came across your February 3, 2010 blog post about fixing the facebook static.ak.fbcdn.net waiting. I've been having this problem lately, but I use a Macbook Pro running Mac OS X 10.5 so I could not follow your directions. Do you know how to fix this problem on a Mac? Thanks!

Mac OS X 10.2 or later
Edit the /private/etc/hosts file. For more information on how to use the hosts file, open Terminal and type: man hosts
Note: Editing this file requires root privileges.
1. Open /Applications/Utilities/NetInfo Manager.
2. To allow editing the NetInfo database, click the padlock in the lower left corner of the window.
3. Enter your Admin password and click OK.
4. In the second column of the browser view, select the node named "machines." You will see entries for -DHCP-, broadcasthost, and localhost in the third column.
5. The quickest way to create a new entry is to duplicate an existing one. So select the "localhost" item in the third column.
6. Choose Duplicate from the Edit menu. A confirmation alert appears.
7. Click Duplicate. A new entry called "localhost copy" appears, and its properties are shown below the browser view.
8. Double-click the value of the ip_address property and enter the IP address of the other computer.
9. Double-click the value of the name property and enter the hostname you want for the other computer.
10. Click the serves property and choose Delete from the Edit menu.
11. Choose Save from the File menu. A confirmation alert appears.
12. Click Update this copy.
13. Repeat steps 6 through 12 for each additional host entry you wish to add.
14. Choose Quit from the NetInfo Manager menu. You do not need to restart the computer.
Right Click on etc and select properties.
Go to security tab
click Edit
click Add
click Advanced
Click Find Now
select Everyone from result.
click ok
give full control
click ok
click ok
Excellent
Thank you very much.
Me too face the same issue in facebook . Now its cleared.

My question is what did change between theses 2 days? Did facebook change this image location? :S
Best regards,
Cláudio.

I already had this in my hosts file, and strangely enough, REMOVING it from there allowed facebook to load.
Anyway, thanks for this!
im running windows 7 professional
64 bit
sp 1
running both firefox & IE and neither will work
I have tried everything and it never loads but i tried command prompt to see if I could ping and it works
any suggestions.
I ran malware bytes
eg(static.ak.fbcdn.net).
Tab is written ( waiting for facebook.com)
so, which IP address/host name is should refer to?
